How to Play Stud Poker

Posted by Assistanc3 On June - 12 - 2009

Stud Poker is where players are dealt a mix of cards face down and face up with multiple betting rounds.  There are many different types of Stud Poker the most common would be 5 and 7 Card Stud.  The game H.O.R.S.E uses 3 different variants of stud poker;  Razz, Seven card Stud, and Seven card Stud Eight or better.

Shuffle Up and Deal

Each player has placed their ante to receive cards
Two cards dealt face down to each player, one card dealt face up to each player around clockwise. When using a ‘bring in’ which is a forced bet (kinda like blinds) the player with the lowest card showing of the up faced cards is required to put in chips.

Now the betting and folding starts with the player to the left of the ‘bring in’ or dealer if no bring in is used either can call (the bring in amount) or complete the bet (the stakes your playing) or fold.

Those players remaining are dealt 1 card up and the player who is showing the highest or best hand of the two up cards is first to act.  The betting rounds continue with the last ’street’ card being dealt face down.  The number of cards the players hold is also known as the street, fifth card is 5th Street and seventh card is 7th Street.

7 card stud is summarized as 2 down, 4 up, 1 down.

  • Two cards dealt face down to each player
one card dealt face up to each player
  • upcard to each player (Third Street)
  • upcard to each player (Fourth Street)
  • upcard to each player (Fifth Street)
  • upcard to each player (Sixth Street/Turn)
  • downcard to each player (Seventh Street/River)
  • showdown

Notable Rules
Where the player with the lowest-ranking face-up card is required to open the first betting round for a minimal amount, ties can be broken by suit. Diamonds (lowest), followed by Clubs, Hearts, and Spades (highest)

After a betting round a burn card is used.

It is possible to go through the deck so on the final round instead of dealing a downcard,
a single community card is dealt to the center of the table, and is shared by everyone.

Variations can be made by eliminating betting rounds,
dealing more than one upcard at a time for one or more rounds.

There are some variants of Stud Poker that use community cards (shared cards in the middle)

    Stud sounds interesting.
I admit that when I was watching you play HORSE the other night, I was kinda confused when it came to the stud games. After I read this blog I thought Ohh Ok, I get it :)
This sounds like a much more difficult game than regular holdem with a lot more to pay attention to with all those cards showing, and being able to remember those cards once people fold.

I wouldn’t mind playing a game or 2 to get a feel for it, thanks for the info.
